Three Injured in Macon Tractor-Trailer Crash

Tractor Trailer crash

A three-car crash sent three people to the hospital and backed up Interstate 75 in Macon Thursday afternoon. According to the Bibb County Sheriff’s Office, a southbound tractor-trailer rear-ended a sedan near the I-75 and Interstate 16 split, forcing it into the rear of the sports utility vehicle in front of it.

Three occupants from the sedan were transported to an area hospital, and all are expected to survive their injuries.

The accident caused congestion and spillover traffic on some secondary roads, including nearby Riverside Drive. Within hours, the interstate was cleared and traffic resumed flowing normally.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation.

Sedan-style vehicles are at a serious disadvantage when rear-ended by tractor-trailers due to the significant size and weight disparity. The elevated height of a truck’s front end can override the rear of a smaller car, causing devastating underride accidents in which the truck crushes the back of the sedan underneath the cab. These collisions often result in severe injuries or fatalities, particularly for backseat passengers, even at moderate speeds.

Accidents involving tractor-trailers are one of the most dangerous and frequently result in life-altering injuries.
