Macon, Georgia Ranks Third Nationally for Car Accident Fatalities

A recent study reveals that the streets of Macon, Georgia are some of the deadliest in the United States. From 2017 to 2021, the city experienced an alarmingly high car accident fatality rate of about 22 per 100,000 people, according to the study based on data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

During the period studied, 171 fatalities occurred in Macon, the third-highest fatality rate in the country. The nine other deadliest cities in the top 10 are:

  • Baton Rouge, Louisiana
  • Memphis, Tennessee
  • St. Louis, Missouri
  • Fort Lauderdale, Florida
  • Birmingham, Alabama
  • Knoxville, Tennessee
  • Detroit, Michigan
  • Tie- Albuquerque, New Mexico, and San Bernardino, California
  • Little Rock, Arkansas

Some tips to keep you and your loved ones safe while driving include:

  • Drive defensively and be attentive to other motorists around you.
  • Do a vehicle safety check before driving.
  • Wear your seat belt.
  • Be cautious of other motorists tailgating or driving recklessly or aggressively.
  • Keep a distance of one car length for every 10 miles per hour behind others.
  • Lower your speed during inclement weather. 
  • Obey all traffic signals and road signs.
  • Remember the three D’s – Do not drive drunk, distracted, or drowsy.
