Warner Robins Man Killed in Macon Motorcycle Crash

A Warner Robins man is dead following a fatal Macon motorcycle crash on Hawkinsville Road in Macon Tuesday. According to the Bibb County Sheriff’s Office, a Chevrolet Avalanche turning left onto Hawkinsville Road from a gas station collided with an oncoming Harley Davidson motorcycle just north of the Allen Road intersection around 7:30 a.m.

The motorcycle rider was pronounced dead at the scene and the other driver was transported to an area hospital, where he is listed in stable condition.

All lanes of Hawkinsville Road between Houston and Allen Roads were closed temporarily while deputies investigated. The sheriff’s office has not reported whether any charges will be filed, nor released any additional information. Anyone who witnessed the crash or has information is asked to contact the Bibb County Sheriff’s Office at 478-751-7500 and speak with a Fatality Investigator.

Left-turning vehicles pose one of the most dangerous situations motorcyclists face on the road. When a vehicle turns left across the path of an oncoming motorcycle, the motorcyclist typically has little or no time to react, resulting in severe and usually fatal collisions. These types of crashes are also one of the most common involving motorcycles due to their smaller size and visibility. Drivers often misjudge a motorcycle’s speed or distance, or fail to see it entirely, especially when pulling out of driveways, parking lots, or at intersections.

In Georgia, drivers making a left turn must yield the right-of-way to all oncoming traffic, and those who do not and cause accidents can be held both criminally and civilly liable. If a left-turning driver causes a crash resulting in a motorcyclist’s death, they may face charges ranging from failure to yield to vehicular homicide, punishable by one to 15 years imprisonment and significant fines, depending on the circumstances. Surviving family members may also pursue wrongful death claims for compensation.
