Two semi-trucks collided in a fiery crash at a Wilkinson County intersection Tuesday, the third serious accident in two months at the same intersection. According to the Wilkinson County coroner’s office, the intersection of two major highways, State Route 112 and U.S. Highway 441, has a two-decade history of devastating accidents, many of them fatal. The Wilkinson County Sheriff’s Office reported that both drivers in Tuesday’s accident had exited the trucks before the fire erupted. No one was injured.
Two months earlier, two semi-trucks collided in the intersection. In that accident, according to police, one truck ran the stop sign and “T-boned” the other, igniting a fire that killed one of the drivers. Two weeks later, another accident at the intersection left three people seriously injured after one driver ran the stop sign. The Georgia Department of Transportation (G-DOT) reports that all crashes at the intersection over the last four years resulted from drivers failing to yield.
A spokesperson for G-DOT said the department is moving forward with plans to make the intersection safer, and measures are already in place to alert drivers on those routes ahead of the intersection. Rumble strips have been installed on Highway 112, along with dual “stop ahead” signs on both roads, larger stop signs, and additional yield signs in the intersection itself.
The department is awaiting approval to add flashing lights to the stop ahead signs as a short-term solution before beginning construction on a roundabout replacement for the intersection, slated for 2025. The department said a roundabout is the best long-term solution for the area as it will eliminate contact points and slow down drivers approaching and moving through the intersection.
