Fatal Motorcycle Accident in Monroe County

A motorcycle crash on Highway 87 left one dead and one in critical condition Saturday in Monroe County. According to the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office, the motorcycle attempted to pass a pickup truck, turning into a driveway and instead collided with the truck. The motorcycle passenger was pronounced dead at the scene, and the driver was transported to a Macon hospital in critical condition. The accident is still under investigation.

Motorcyclists are more vulnerable during an accident due to the lack of steel framing and airbags common in passenger vehicles. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), 14 percent of all motorcycle accidents result in fatalities nationally each year, many due to lack of helmet use.

Over 84,000 motorcyclists are injured each year, resulting in catastrophic injuries. The NHTSA reports that helmet use reduces the risk of head injuries by more than 65 percent and death by more than half. One of the most common types of motorcycle accidents involves turning vehicles, particularly those making left-hand turns.
