An Atlanta mother and an innocent bystander were killed during a police chase last week that ended in a fatal crash. The incident occurred near Campbellton and Barge Roads when the driver of a Dodge Ram 1500 pickup truck ran a red light at the intersection, colliding with the woman’s Dodge Challenger in the intersection. The crash caused the Challenger to leave the road and hit a utility pole. She died at the scene.
According to the Georgia State Patrol (GSP), troopers were in pursuit of the truck at the request of the Atlanta Police Department. Troopers encountered the driver on Martin Luther King Jr. Drive at Fairburn Road, where Atlanta police attempted a traffic stop. The driver refused to stop, initiating a police chase instead, which began on Interstate 285 until the driver exited the freeway at Campbellton Road. The GSP Troop C Specialized Reconstruction Team is investigating the crash.
The driver is facing four felony charges of murder, homicide by vehicle in the first degree, fleeing, and possession of marijuana with intent to distribute, and 14 misdemeanor charges, including reckless and aggressive driving, driving in an emergency lane with no emergency, and speeding. Officers said the driver was involved in a police pursuit days earlier.
The victim’s family has established a GoFundMe account to raise funds for funeral expenses.
