On Monday, seven people were killed in a multi-vehicle crash on Interstate 85 in Jackson County. According to the Georgia State Patrol, a tractor-trailer initiated a chain-reaction collision involving six vehicles.
Police said the truck hit a Dodge van, causing a multi-car collision between the other vehicles. The van caught fire during the crash, and all seven occupants were pronounced dead at the scene.
All northbound lanes of I-85 were closed until 9:45 p.m. Jackson County is located 60 miles northeast of Atlanta.
Tractor-trailer accidents are prevalent on Georgia’s highways and cause the most devastating crashes. The massive size and weight of semi-trucks can cause catastrophic injuries and damage, especially when traveling at high speeds, attempting sudden stops, or trying to avoid a hazard. Even a momentary distraction or loss of control can result in tragic outcomes for other motorists.
Multi-vehicle crashes are especially dangerous, as each impact can trigger another, creating a chain reaction that magnifies with the force of every additional collision. Especially for those caught in the middle, who often suffer multiple severe injuries. Fires, rollovers, and secondary crashes are common, making it difficult for first responders to reach, treat, and rescue the injured.
